“Our standard of coaching is very high, and the boys and
girls have all worked really hard – we look forward to
welcoming even more young players in the new season.”
Down to the wire
With off-the-field activity gathering momentum in the UAE,
the fortunes of the team inManchester were, as is typical for
English football, a rollercoaster ride. Mixed results in the
UEFA Champions League did not affect English Premier
League form, with the players securing points on a weekly
basis.
But despite this, City struggled to shake off Manchester
United, and going into the last few weeks of the season it
looked as though they would once again go another year
without the coveted title. That all changed when they
defeated United at the Etihad Stadium, thanks to a superb
towering header from captain Vincent Komapany – who was
arguably City’s best player throughout the campaign.
It all led to a fascinating last day of the season on which the
team needed to defeat QPR to secure the title of champions
of England. As the game entered the last few minutes,
nobody could believe what was happening – City had gone
behind 2-1 and needed two goals.
Sheer emotion
Incredibly, they both came, courtesy of strikers Edin Dzeko
and Sergio Aguero. When the final whistle blew, the sheer
emotion in the Etihad Stadium was as intense as the sport
has ever seen. Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and a
contingent from Abu Dhabi looked on proudly whilst the
two boys from Abu Dhabi who led out the team that day
joined in the celebrations. Following a parade inManchester,
the famous trophy was flown to Abu Dhabi, where it went
on display – first at the School of Football and then at the
CityStore in Marina Mall.
It was the second time CityStore had welcomed City
silverware, following the FA Cup’s arrival a season earlier.
Once again, people flocked to have their picture taken with
a trophy won by the Club. Fans were also quick to take home
team shirts with special gold “Champions” name and
numbering on the back. The store quickly sold out and had
to order more to cope with the phenomenal demand.
As the dust settled on the 2011/2012 season, Manchester City
will look back on a time of real progression within both the
club and in the UAE. It is a truly exciting time to be a City
fan, and through Sky Blue membership and the School of
Football everyone in the UAE can get involved.
