Glamorous debut
Herrera’s entry into the fashion world was considered the most glamorous
debut for years. She launched her products to the accompaniment of classic
Cole Porter tunes at Manhattan’s stylish Metropolitan Club. Her collection of
lavish, couture-inspired dresses fitted perfectly with the spirit of the eighties.
Socialite Jackie Onassis was among the most prestigious of Herrera’s early
clients – and her fame rocketed after she designed a stunning bridal gown –
complete with shamrock appliqués – for the wedding of Onassis’s daughter
Caroline Kennedy in 1996.
In the modern age, Herrera’s essential designs show no sign of losing their
panache. These days, one of Herrera’s most prominent clients is actress Renée
Zellweger, who has said that the designs make her feel that she is ‘telling the
truth’.
How lucky we are still to be benefiting from the creative work of one of
fashion’s most compelling figures.
