Conrad Shawcross’s sculptural work blends the mathematical and the philosophical, the industrial and the natural; transforming architectural spaces into natural works of art. Inspired by London’s oldest botanical garden—the Chelsea Physic Garden—Shawcross’s artwork will create a powerful centrepiece for the community, drawing people through Chelsea Barracks and into the squares beyond. ‘I did some research into the area and one of the key things was the horticulture, with Chelsea Physic Garden, and the history. The awareness of plants and the distinct history were in my mind’s eye, the piece had to be a sculptural yet natural formation. The piece is very mathematical but has echoes of many things, so hopefully, it will have many reminiscences and oscillate between different meanings for differing people,’ comments Shawcross. Lee Hallman, Head of design at Qatari diar, the doha- based international real estate company that owns the site, said: ‘Art is very much at the heart of Belgravia, so it was important that it not only formed part of the development, but that it was in keeping with the local surroundings and its heritage. Conrad Shawcross has shown true dedication to ensuring his artwork both architecturally blends with the streetscape and is of interest to the new and existing neighbourhood.’ vicki Young, Head of Arts Commissioning at Futurecity, said: ‘The emphasis at Chelsea Barracks was for public art commissions that would complement the form, quality and world-class design of this prestigious environment; authentically embedding the development’s rich history and heritage into place.’ Chelsea Barracks provides truly incomparable, expertly serviced relaxation and business amenities. These encompass a beautifully designed, contemporary spa with a hair and beauty salon and a fully equipped, state-of-the- art gym all designed by Goddard Littlefair. As well as a well-appointed business suite, supplemented by large boardrooms, a concierge service is permanently on hand to fulfil every wish. Shawcross’s exploration of complex geometric sculptures will combine dramatic scope with a subtle poetic grace to add charm and character to this international design quarter to construct a signature hallmark that is set to stand the test of time.
