Born to a wealthy Venezuelan-American family she was dressing in the finest clothes and rubbing shoulders with movers and shakers from an early age. In 1972 she appeared on an International Best Dressed List, being promoted to its Hall of Fame in 1980. It was a natural step, then, for her friend Diana Vreeland, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, to suggest that she design her own range. She was awareded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2008. The Spanish honoured here with a Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts, presented to her by King Don Juan Carlos I. The woman knows good style.
