Simply Abu Dhabi XI

T H E S P O R T O F K I N G S We take a look at how Coutts Polo at the Palace stormed onto the polo scene in its 2012 debut to become one of the best events in the international polo calendar. Abu Dhabi’s glitterati congregated in November last year for one of the most highly anticipated events on the international polo calendar. For horse lovers and those who simply enjoy the thrill of a testosterone fuelled atmosphere, this weekend of world-class polo action on the lawns of Emirates Palace had something for everyone. The sprinklers on the expansive grounds of the Emirates Palace had been lovingly watering the lawns for weeks in anticipation and guests had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of their VVIP badges. The scene was set for Coutts Polo at the Palace 2012. As the sun beat down on the golden façade of the Palace, four international teams representing Abu Dhabi, London, Milan and Buenos Aires cantered out onto the pristine new polo field to riotous applause. Off the field and in the VIP polo garden area, Maserati showcased its latest models with guests being able to test drive around the Palace grounds, Hublot’s watch gallery had guests trying on the latest in their range and the La Martina boutique offered a stunning range of polo clothing and beautiful leather accessories. VVIP guests meanwhile were impeccably looked after by Emirates Palace butlers and served delicious drinks and an exquisite menu whilst relaxing in lavishly furnished marquees featuring Damien Hirst artwork. Over the two days, players took no prisoners and as the sunwent down on the final day of the competition, Hublot Team Buenos Aires emerged victorious over Coutts Team Abu Dhabi after a thrilling 3-2 penalty shoot-out to secure the Coutts Trophy. Captain Mohammed Al Habtoor stood proudly as he was awarded the trophy by His Highness Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research at the prizegiving Ceremony. The tournament was inspired by London’s MINT Polo in the Park, which has pioneered the City Polo Series by bringing the classic sport to a contemporary cosmopolitan audience. Faris Al Yebhouni, Captain of Coutts TeamAbuDhabi summed up his experience of Coutts Polo at the Palace, “Emirates Palace is fantastic. It’s fascinating to be playing here at one of the best hotels in the world. It’s a combination of fun and competition with a great crowd.” Coutts Polo at the Palace returns to Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi on 22 and 23 November this year.
