Towards the end of the 19th century, a young girl named Estelle Arpels – the daughter of a dealer in precious stones – met a boy named Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a stone-cutter, that was in itself a fortuitous combination of heritage and talents. It was the beginning of a love story that would culminate in the creation of one of the most famed jewellery houses in the world. In 1895, the young couple were married and they had much in common: youthful enthusiasm, a pioneering spirit, an ethic of family solidarity, and a passion for precious stones.
