Decades after the original collections first appeared, Mulberry shows are among the most anticipated on the London FashionWeek calendar, famed for their all-encompassing themes, beautiful invitations, gorgeous collections and star-studded front rows. Emma Hill has been been creative director at Mulberry since 2007. She has mastered a knack for a distinctive, well-crafted collection year-on-year. This season she had looked to Paris and New York for inspiration and upped her game in the process. Clothes looked uber opulent, sculpted and grown- up. Fun isn’t lost – frivolity is all-present, woven throughout the items with jazzy twists – but this is an altogether more sophisticated vibe from Hill. That said, she brings a very British sense of humour to all her work and makes a conscious effort not to take her job too seriously. Shearling has been ‘straightened like hair’ (her words) and acts as a panel hem on a coat, or is turned into a grand sleeve on a fisherman’s jacket. How to wear it? Why with skin-tight leather, shoulder length gloves of course. It’s very fairy princess. Overstated puff sleeves are built into thick tweeds and chunky tartans. Boxy neat jackets are framed with dark borders and worn under oxblood red capes. Fixings are simple and unfussy. Expect to see cigarette pants worn with boxy platforms all over the high street this season.
