In fact, lightness is the theme of the collection. Colourful laser-cut organza is layered so that it resembles a waterfall cascading, in a nod to the Lagerfeld and Fendi ‘The Glory of Water’ exhibition in Paris. Formal yet futuristic, the tiered organza dresses evoke the fountains of Paris and Rome. While there are classic inspirations, Lagerfeld is also obsessed with modernity. With what he terms ‘hyperlinking’ – evoking the tech- savvy world we live in – there is a modular element to the collection as well, with the motifs in the jackets and skirts evoking digital circuitry. Tunic dresses in chiffon, shorts and tops in blue and grey, are all paired with bold leather coats in dark colours or glittering woven PVC. There are coats with geometric patterns of red and yellow fur as well as chiffon, in a colourful interplay of textures and shares. The technical treatments of the mix of fabrics on display underscore Lagerfeld's love of modernity. Lagerfeld has presented scores of collections over the years, but his work with Fendi might be considered his most serious. Not only an exercise in colour, texture, and silhouette, the Fendi Spring Summer 2014 collection makes a bold statement about the role of technology in our lives, and the need to connect it back to organic materials. The line is bold, chic, elegant – and above all, modern.
