1 7 9 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I Marc Jacobs SpringSummer 2014 Ready-to-Wear I n a notable departure from the clean minimalism and white palette of other Spring Summer 2014 collections, the always cutting-edge Marc Jacobs instead opted to take a different route, one that emphasises rich colour, draping, texture – and yes, even black. While the colour theme may be considered sombre for the season by conventional standards, Jacobs celebrates spring in his own renegade way – with floral patterns, the occasional sheer panel, fluid silhouettes, and even a bit of bling. The clothes for spring and summer, in contrast to other designers’ looks, are not minimalist in the slightest, but embellished with prints, appliqués, embroidery, and tassels. Large-scale floral prints showing red, white, maroon, teal and plum hibiscus are seen on new coats and dresses, cut in a sporty fashion, yet somehow retaining a sense of elegance. While some of the selections offer full coverage in the form of billowing trousers accented by a wrapped drape, high necks, and long sleeves, the look is unmistakably mischievous, modern and cool, much like Jacobs himself. Two stand-out evening looks elevate the theme into pure glamour. A burgundy column dress rendered in metallic plum grazes the ground, accented by a feathery appliqué at the hip and a high-necked ruffled bodice in black, evoking the formal elegance of the 1890s. The other noteworthy look for evening is a long, black-and-green floral patterned gown with intricate beading, presented in a full silhouette, ruched at the hip and with just the right amount of volume at the shoulder to balance the slim column shape. Spirited, intricate, and elegantly sporty, the Marc Jacobs Spring Summer 2014 Collection is not for the woman who wants what everyone else is wearing.
