2 4 4 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I The 650S is instantly recognisable as a McLaren in the 12Cmould, but the front end has been modelled after the new P1 supercar. It’s not just about looks though: McLaren claim that this new body shape is just as aerodynamically efficient as the 12C, but at 150 mph, downforce has been increased by an incredible 24 percent. The large intakes behind the doors are a sharp contrasting black against the car’s gleaming white and feed air to the radiators required to keep the mighty turbo V-8 engine cool. The all new split-spoke wheels that further enhance the dramatic looks are forged and are bespoke to the 650. The tyres are also exclusive to the 650S, developed specifically by Pirelli for the 650S and branded MC1. As you’d expect, we couldn’t wait to get inside and, when we did, the 650S certainly didn’t disappoint. The cabin is a wonderfully civilised place in which to rapidly pass the miles and, if you can bear to listen to anything other than that thrilling engine note, enjoy the fully integrated, high-quality sound system. It's also pleasingly low on clutter, McLaren having removed all switches, dials and buttons from on and around the steering wheel to allow the driver to focus on the sheer joy of driving. There’s a choice of seats, too: either fully adjustable leather or alcantara buckets, or fixed-back racing shells that shed 33 pounds off the curb weight and hold you tighter. The interior of our car was blessed with the former, and also benefitted from the optional carbon- fibre trim packages both inside and out – a stunning combination from every angle. However, for both Jordana and myself one of the best parts of the cabin is its unbeatable outward visibility that connects driver, car and road in a way few mid- engined supercars do. Another interior item that proved particularly useful to us was the fitted state-of-the- art navigation system, which in our car was pre-programmed with the route to the Ascari Race Resort, our destination of choice for the day.
