1 0 5 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I the creation of each timepiece. Take the distinctive tonneau formed case, with its ergonomically fitting curves and dramatic arcs, as an example. Many hours of preparation are required even before the actual milling procedures can begin. First, the tripartite case requires 86 preliminary stamping and striking operations to prepare the case parts for cutting and milling. Then, the actual machining entails more than 300 separate operations that need to be executed. This is no mass-produced timepiece. State-of-the-art technology with an accuracy of a few microns is necessary to craft the multiple curves and arcs established in the Richard Mille case design aesthetic. Where this new model departs from the original is of course in the dual time function that gives the model its full name. Already an extremely practical watch in its original iteration, the RM 11-02 is elevated with the addition of this dual time component, which is made possible by an entirely new calibre, the RMAC2. The new calibre represents a technical evolution of the RM 011, and offers the wearer a host of added features. The movement at the heart of the timepiece is attached to the case with four silicon braces, which provides additional shock resistance. And like the RM 011, the new watch is water resistant to 50 metres. In addition to the functions of the Flyback chronograph, the annual calendar with oversize date, the 60-minute countdown timer and 24-hour totaliser, the RM 11-02 adds a UTC feature for the indication of a second time zone with a Super- Luminova filled hand. The PVD-treated titaniummovement is fitted with two winding barrels and an automatic winding rotor supplying about 50 hours of power reserve. It takes a bold vision and utter horological mastery to try to improve on a classic. And leave it to Richard Mille to do just that.
