Ever since Raf Simons took over as creative director of Dior, the namesake’s presence has been evoked time and time again through the signature styles that made Dior famous as a couturier. And what Van Assche has done, as creative director of the menswear division, is to use Dior, the man, as the style inspiration. His influence is felt everywhere throughout the collection. Echoes of Monsieur Dior trademark Savile Row attire are to be seen in the new suits, here recreated in a variety of ways. Starting with traditional, tailored pinstripes – very formal – the collection evolves to asymmetrical detailing, leather embellishments, and a variety of modern proportions. And as the founder of the House was also known to wear polka dot neckties, there’s even a polka dot suit, the playful pattern giving an air of ease and fun to the traditional tailoring. The polka dot theme carries through the line as well, adorning jackets and trousers, shirts and accessories. Dior also considered the lily of the valley to be his personal emblem and talisman of good luck – thus the flower appears in the clever embroidery throughout the line, including a suit and knitwear tops.
