Creative director Donatella Versace said of this new direction: “This is about a fresh new Versace, one that is contemporary, clean and strong. It is the way women wear Versace now, and in the future.” And with her spring/summer 2015 ready-to-wear line, Ms Versace delivers what she promised, with a stripped back, bold, and fresh collection. With clean lines, strong colour, and playful detailing, the Versace signature look takes on a more modern and youthful feel. Using less black and metal hardware than in previous outings, the standout feature of the line is the rejuvenated treatment of the house’s Medusa motif. Recast in a modernist Pop Art style, and splashed vibrantly across short 1960s-inspired shift dresses, the iconic logo takes on a new dimension and sense of purpose. Bright colour has always been a Versace mainstay, but this time there’s more subtlety to the palette alongside a new playfulness in the use of colour- blocking. The crystal beading and metallic treatments serve not to dominate the look, but to create a soft shimmer of light over the fabric, letting the colour and cut steal the show. Particularly in the soft purple and apple green, offset with bolder reds and yellows, and in the vibrant teal reminiscent of the Aegean sea, Versace expands the colour vocabulary in a way that feels fresh and new, and brings a sense of effortless cool that marks a departure for the designer.
