The brand has long been synonymous with sophistication, elegance and subtlety. Yet their summer 2015 line – which pays homage to the Spanish domination of Sicily between 1516 and 1713 – is full of bold ideas, vivid colours and striking motifs. It might be the most daringly impressive collection of the year. The fascinating period of history from which the collection takes its cues proves to be a rich source of inspiration. Hints of Iberian folklore, as well as the festivities and customs that were infused into Sicilian popular cultures as a result of the Spanish occupation, can be seen in abundance throughout every piece in the line. Nevertheless, despite the numerous nods to tradition, the designs still manage to be fresh and innovative. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are famed for their ability to bring a modern twist to their source material, and this collection is surely no exception to that rule. Nowhere is this more gloriously evident than the eye-catching series of bullfighter braided brocade jackets, where the iconic gold braiding that usually decorates the costumes of true Spanish bullfighters is instead replaced with sleek black embroidery. It’s a high fashion take on and old-fashioned tradition. Risky, but in an odd way, it works perfectly. It’s fitting that the bullfighter-themed pieces are among the most compelling, since the bull is a central motif of the collection. Printed over tops and oversized T-shirts, the bull is a symbol of power and masculinity that serves as the perfect tribute to the new D&G man; a man who is as strong as he is fearless.
