For three glorious decades, the tasteful sophistication of fine art collided with the brash audacity of popular culture. The results were often brilliant, occasionally disastrous, but always sensational. Not surprisingly, the movement had a seismic impact on fashion. We have Pop Art to thank for the bold prints and patterns that dominated nearly every 1960s wardrobe, as well as the dazzlingly bright colours of the 1970s. In recent years, Pop Art’s influence on fashion has waned as the industry has shied away from melodrama and tended towards a more subtle approach. As with all trends, though, not everybody is content to simply sit back and conform. One such example of a brand whose designers have opted to defiantly march to the beat of their own drum is DSquared2. Their summer 2015 menswear collection is overflowing with colour, humour and delightful kitsch appeal. Tongue-in-cheek mashups of iconic prints, sketches and graffiti inspired by contemporary American artists cover a boxy silhouette. Endearingly ostentatious animal motifs made from leather adorn oversized sweatshirts, bright T-shirts and demi jackets. The collection additionally includes an array of sportswear pieces, all of which are completely in keeping with the line’s overall rowdiness. Fluorescent flourishes and daring graphic designs also make their presence felt in the most decisive way possible.
