5 9 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I The lasting legacy of Baba Zayed The transformation of the Emirates under the benevolence, wisdom and leadership of Sheikh Zayed is almost unfathomable in scope. Although the region had a rich history and culture, at the time the Sheikh was named Ruler of Abu Dhabi, there was no sense of national identity, life in the desert could be a struggle just to survive, and there was little in the way of industry, education or infrastructure. Yet since its founding in 1971, the UAE has more than exceeded international expectations. In a politically turbulent region, the UAE under Sheikh Zayed was, and remains, a model of stability and progress, developing successfully in all areas of life, including social services, health, education, technology, trade and finance. Sheikh Zayed’s philosophy, informed by his deep faith, was that the resources of the country should be used to benefit the people living across all the Emirates. Sheikh Zayed also developed international ties establishing the UAE as a country with global reach and significance. “The greatest use that can be made of wealth is to invest it in creating generations of educated and trained people.” – HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan The beloved father of his nation, Sheikh Zayed passed away on 2 November 2004. His vision for the future success of the UAE continues to be developed by his son, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who was elected to succeed his father as President of the United Arab Emirates. Baba Zayed made great contributions to his country, which dramatically altered the life and destiny of his citizens on an economical, intellectual and social level. In a truly remarkable achievement, Sheikh Zayed was able to build a modern and sophisticated country whilst preserving the particular cultural identity of his nation. His legacy will live forever in the hearts and minds of all who cherish the UAE.
