Though undoubtedly exquisite, it is perhaps these superb components that prove least impressive of the entire creation. Because, in order to construct such a stunning piece, Franck Muller’s research and development teamhad to work for over six months just to successfully and reliably combine all three into a single watch. 56 diamonds, of 0.32 carats in total, grace the face of the 43.70-milimetre Giga Tourbillon. While certainly stunning, the weight of the stones created a distinct design challenge, as the heft of the gems influence the sensitive Tourbillon. To solve this enviable dilemma, the designers developed a new setting style and grain setting, placing the diamonds across the frame, minimising the height and weight of the frame while gracefully accentuating its features. Inside the 18-carat white golf Curveux case lies the new Giga Tourbillon cage, powered by four barrels, that utilises the aforementioned titanium rather than stainless steel, which is the traditional metal used in a Tourbillon. Making the timepiece more exclusive, the titanium enhances the elasticity of the cage, allowing it to absorb impacts and increasing component resilience. As with every Franck Muller creation, the Giga Tourbillon is conceptualised and manufactured in-house by the brand’s elite craftsmen who finish the watch with circular graining, rhodium plating and hand bevelling. “Perfectly balanced style” is a phrase that can be accurately used to describe both the Giga Tourbillon’s appearance and its inner movement and complication. It is timeless in its design, accented by its hand-sewn alligator strap – the look is one that would be just as relevant today as it will be 100 years from now.
