2 6 7 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I On my arrival I contacted the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and they provided a wealth of useful information and advice, and one of the recommendations was a visit to the Wynwood Arts District. Ten years ago this neighbourhood would not be on anyone’s visiting itinerary… unless you were an adrenalin junkie. It was just too dangerous. Now it’s perfectly safe and populated with dozens of museums, galleries, andwarehouses used as exhibition spaces. The Rubell Family Collection is well worth a visit as it has one of the world’s largest private collections of contemporary art, with over 1,500 pieces spanning several decades, from well- known artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and DamienHirst through to Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol. The Bakehouse Art Complex is another must-see and it’s free to the public and open seven days a week. The complex acts as an incubator and springboard for emerging artists, allowing them to creatively explore and develop their artistic endeavours. There are around 60 contemporary artists from over 16 countries at work and art lovers can meet, chat and even buy artwork.
