Winston was born into the jewellery business and showed a natural inclination and innate gift for spotting and evaluating precious gems. As the son of a small jewellery shop owner, he was surrounded by valuable stones and soon began to trust his own senses, quickly turning his blossoming talent into sizeable profits – at just 12 years-old Winston spotted a 2-carat emerald in a local pawn shop, hidden in a tray of junk jewellery. Knowing what he had found, Winston purchased what the shop owner thought to be a worthless piece of costume jewellery for just 25¢ – and sold it two days later for $800.
