2 5 2 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I Mercedes-Maybach S-Class ByDamienReid A dmittedly I was in a lazy mood as I reclined back in a massive leather armchair with my feet up on the footstool. I couldn’t even reach the remote control for the TV without having to get up. Yep, lazy. The movie was rubbish and I wanted to catch the news but that darned TV remote was out of reach. The sun was blaring through on a warmish afternoon in Southern California, so being the lazy sort I was, I flicked the switch to close the curtains, leant across to the fridge and pouredmyself another cold drink and accepted that I was going to watch this movie. Thankfully the long-stemmed glass had its own purpose-made holder that stopped it from sloshing when we went over speed humps. Welcome to the rear of the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 which, if you were flying commercially, would be ‘welcome to your first class suite,’ because it has all the hallmarks of Seat 1A in any Etihad flight. The return of Maybach has been a carefully orchestrated move, given that the last and only car of the modern Mercedes era to wear aMaybach badge didn’t exactly sell a storm as it was based on outdated technology before it was launched. As nice as the previous Maybach was, many saw it as an over-dressed W220 series S-Class Mercedes which was nearing the end of its production and continued well after its W221 S-Class replacement hit the market in 2005.
