Simply Abu Dhabi Magazine XXI
6 5 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I What range of fabrics have been used to produce this collection? DD: Georgette and charmeuse are the key fabrics for this collection, often enriched by laces. Is this a one-off collection? SG: This was a one-off project; we still don’t know though what direction we are taking. What makes your Abaya and Hijab collection different from what is already available? DD: It is local, yet truly Dolce &Gabbana. It has the Dolce & Gabbana craftsmanship, style and choice of materials. Just like any other product we make, these pieces are truly unique. Is the target market predominantly a Muslim Arab audience or do you feel there will be an appetite from a wider audience? SG: We have had an incredible response to this collection worldwide. We have had enquiries from all over the world: Europe, Russia, the US. I think the audience is wider than what we originally thought. What kind of feedback have you received from your Arab friends and in general? DD: We asked back and forth throughout the development process, and they supported the project from start till end. They have given us advice, which we have followed. SG: Overall I think the feedback has been great. Media and audience response has been absolutely huge. Of course you will always have those who criticise no matter what you do Where will the collections be available? SG: The collection is available throughout theMiddle East (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar) and selected cities in Europe (London, Paris, Milan, Monaco). What do you love about Arab culture? DD: The Middle East traces its roots to a very antique civilisation, much like Europe and Italy. There are also a few aspects that we have in common: the warmth and the passion of the people, the life rhythms, the love for the flavours of the land, the literary tradition. Would you consider creating a Dolce & Gabbana Men’s Kandura Collection? DD: Never say never. Do you think Dolce & Gabbana might enhance this delightfully diversified ideology of producing multicultural fashion by accommodating other ethnic market sectors, such as the Indian market with the traditional sari, for example? SG: As we mentioned before, we have previously created special collections for specific countries or cities. We do not have a business in India, but we would probably consider a collection of sari otherwise. They are so colourful and beautiful!
