This season’s DSquared man is the thinking man’s rebel, revelling in youth culture and claiming it as his own. He is bold, confident, and no stranger to attracting all the right kinds of attention. This is Dean and Dan Caten’s (the creative geniuses behind DSquared) twelfth year at the helm of the brand, and since its inception it has only gone from strength to strength: in terms of its innovation, and its commitment to providing an exciting and fashion-forward show, this was considered their greatest season yet. They seamlessly meld contrasts, and always deliver something completely unexpected: this season’s collection was certainly no exception! Whilst many of the pieces were heavily embellished, they still exuded a unique brand of spiky masculinity. Key pieces from the collection included the camouflage pattern parka which was gently appliqued with tonal sequins. Acid bleach jeans and yards of dramatically ripped and torn denim typified the trousers for the collection, as the design team focused on creating spangled knits and shirts that moved away from the norm. Outerwear was key to creating the built-up, layered look that typified the collection and the two most striking and commercially viable pieces from the showwere the bomber jacket and ripped denim jacket which were both elongated and enhanced by panels of Japanese-style floral silk jacquard. Patterns were bright, bold and designed to attract attention, contrasting perfectly with the abundance of denim and black leather that features so heavily in the collection. This was a collection that was subversive and stand out, one designed to be worn by a man who is brave, fashion-forward, and who has his own very distinctive style. The DSquared man will try anything once and he wants to wear it all: a kilt, razor-slimmotorcycle pants and platform boots encrusted with star embroidery. Whatever he wears, he has the requisite confidence to pull it off, because he is powerful and people are drawn to his unique brand of style. DSquared shows often shock and inspire us, and this collection certainly remained true to the brand’s DNA. In their trademark style we saw the creative directors mesh disparate points of view to create a new and entirely unexpected statement. The collection unified the worlds of glam rock with British urban street culture to create a line that felt rooted in something solid and true of our recent past whilst still looking to the future to create something wholly new, modern, and completely wearable.
