This makes it much more pleasant to use, allowing you to listen to music and have a conversation as you style. Thirteen litres of air are propelled up the amplifier every second – that's speedy! There are three airflow settings, four heat settings (including a 28-degree constant cool one) and a cool shot button to set your style. There's no risk of it getting too hot, either, as it intelligently measures the air temperature 20 times per second, preventing damage to you and your hair, as well as protecting the shine. Negative ions help reduce static and the LED display shows you exactly how the heat and airflow are set. At 659g, it's light yet its quality lends perfectly to its weight. Dyson hasn't forgotten its social media presence either, with YouTube, Instagram and Twitter etc. all offering help, advice and online tutorials to guide you through the styling process. Speaking with the Dyson team, I was keen to not just find out more from the hair styling experts but, more importantly, the mechanics and thought process behind this innovative product. I spoke to Tom Crawford, Global Category Director of Personal Care at Dyson. “The traditional hair dryer design hasn’t changed for over 60 years. Conventional hair dryers often have large motors, meaning the motor has to be put in the head of the machine. As a result the hair dryer can be bulky, and can blast air at extreme temperatures – all with the risk of hair being sucked into the filter at the back. By placing the motor in the handle, and having a hollow air multiplier loop at the top, the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer gets around these issues. The Dyson digital motor V9 that powers our hair dryer has the diameter of a coin, but spins at up to 110,000 times a minute, generating fast and focused airflow. When we set out to create the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, instead of just thinking how we can make existing hair dryers better, we started by studying the science of hair from root to tip to understand in depth what happens to hair when it’s exposed to heat and airflow. By combining this knowledge with our motors expertise, we were able to completely re-think the hair dryer.” I've tried it for myself and I'm hooked. It's not just a world-class performing hair dryer but also a thing of beauty. Originally released in a colourway of fuchsia and iron, the latest offering is in white and silver. There is even the option to add to your order a limited edition box; designed by James Dyson himself, it beautifully houses your appliance so it is protected and perfect for travel. I also asked the Dyson team if there was anything else due to be released from them – due to the success and high praise of this invention, surely it's a natural progression to expand the collection of personal care. Keeping things very tight-lipped, they couldn't reveal any information to me just yet, but I'm sure there are even more great things to come from this brand that just keeps pushing the expected into the supersonic.
