Within the body of the whale is the bar itself, which is modelled on a sea turtle, and it features a floating mural made using pyrography – a traditional Maldivian art form. The Whale Bar is the best place to chill and relax at sunset. Woven together by pathways featuring seasonal work from artists-in-residence and pop-up installations using locally sourced objects and materials, the lush and expansive resort surroundings deliver luxurious island living to the most discerning global travellers. The Coastal Zone on the south side of Vommuli is located on a distinctive coastline where the island comes close to the coral reef which encircles it. As such, the Coastal Family Villas are divided into two varieties: six units jutting out of the jungle and half-perched on the rocky coast, and six units sitting on the rocky shoals that fringe the island. The design of the villas is reminiscent of theMaldivian dhoni – multi-purpose sailboats with a motor or lateen sails which sail these waters, wrapped by a sail-inspired roof opening on two sides to reveal expansive decks and verandas celebrating the magnificent sea views. Home to a PADI-certified diving centre, guests are invited to take advantage of an array of exhilarating excursions, including swimming withmanta rays and dolphins, photographing the beautiful corals and richmarine life of the private reef, as well as parasailing and jet or water-skiing. Complimentary amenities for stand-up paddling, canoeing and catamaran sailing are also provided, while the translucent waters often drawguests to charter a yacht to enjoy hopping across to isolated islands, deep-sea fishing, and dolphin and sunset cruises. The Maldives are renowned for their fresh seafood, particularly tuna. Maldivian dishes are often spicy and flavoured with coconut, and they include curries known as mas riha, as well as fihunu mas (barbecued fish basted with chili). The classic Maldivian breakfast mas huni – shredded smoked fish served with grated coconut – is also delectable.
