However, with 250 diamonds in the case of an RM037 Full Set model, it’s easy to appreciate why. The perfectly flush surface of the RM 037 bears testament to how Richard Mille have absolutely mastered the art of gemsetting – in one of the first ever watches in carbon composite to be set with precious stones. No small feat at all, but then overcoming obstacles and achieving unprecedented results is par for the course at Richard Mille. To create the bejewelled case narrow channels are scooped out of the carbon with forensic precision, and inserted into the space are gold prongs to hold the gemstones. The hand- polished prongs in red or white gold are produced separately and then inserted around the numerous 0.25mm bearings destined to firmly contain the diamonds. The finished effect is dazzling and with every slight undulation of the wrist the intense sparkle of the diamonds is thrown into dramatic relief by the matt carbon contours of the case. It creates a unique and powerful appearance while simultaneously ensuring optimal protection for the calibre. The RM 037 houses the Calibre CRMA1, a skeletonised automatic movement with hours, minutes, adjustable rotor geometry, oversize date and functions selector, and with an impressive 50-hour power reserve. Richard Mille explain that the objective of the RM 037 is to construct a synthesis, to bring together all the experience the brand have gained since the company’s creation into one watch. “And it had to be spectacular, both technically and aesthetically with finishing also of an exceptional level.” They say, concluding, “Beneath its highly contemporary appearance, the watch respects all the canons of high-end watchmaking.”
