R ichard Mille creates watches that are inspired by a wide spectrum of sports, but the man and his extreme high-tech Swiss watchmaking manufacture have a particularly strong connection to the world of Formula One racing. After all, this is the brand that builds racing machines for the wrist. The latest in a long line of extraordinary timepieces is the RM055 Yas Marina Circuit – an eye-grabbing piece designed in the colours of the YMC, one of the world’s most advanced motor racing facilities ever built. The watch is stunning in the signature YMC hues of white and a striking turquoise called Yas Blue. The calibre RMUL2 movement handles acceleration forces of over 500 G. The construction of the watch is as meticulously conceived and constructed as an F1 car. The proprietary carbon TPTmaterial used for the case consists of over 600 layers of carbon fibre, making it exceptionally rigid and highly resistant to impact. As is to be expected, the movement exacts extreme performance. Highly skeletonised, the open architecture showcases the PVD and Titalyt-treated mainplate and bridges. The treatment guarantees optimum rigidity as well as providing ultra-smooth and flat surfaces, which are key to optimum functioning of the gear train. A variable inertia balance wheel ensures reliability under impact and during assembly and dismantling, thereby increasing the watch’s precision over the long term. The regulator index is eliminated, and a more accurate and repeatable inertia adjustment is possible thanks to four small adjustable weights located directly on the balance wheel. The double- barrelled mechanism helps to optimise long-term torque stability and performance. The stored energy is dispersed, reducing pressure and friction on the gears, bearings and pivots, thus improving performance.
