1 2 3 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I FERRAGAMO The new Salvatore Ferragamo men’s autumn/winter 2017/2018 collection is the first created by Guillaume Meilland, recently appointed men’s design director by the brand’s executive board. This season, Meilland created a new tailoring code and a sartorial language for the Maison. He started with the men’s silhouette and the unparalleled craftsmanship skills for which Ferragamo is famous worldwide. The style is urban and modern, and the collection presents a more elegant and tailored silhouette as well as a more voluminous and relaxed one. Outerwear is one of the collection’s key elements: naval pea coats and flight jackets are revisited in a contemporary way with coloured fabrics. For example, calfskin has been crafted so well on a raincoat as though it were rubber. Cashmere and English gabardine are mixed together to create warm and soft knitwear pieces. But the crown jewels in the Ferragamo collection are definitely the shoes. For the autumn, Guillaume Meilland conceived shoes in two styles: one is a distinctly American design that takes the formof a work-boot with a stacked sole and a robust shape when covered with rubber studs, while the other silhouette is more Italian thanks to its fine form and exquisite handwork. In terms of bags there is a duality seen with an oversized holdall in leather and lined with fur, and an enlarged leather hip-pack worn over the shoulder like a rucksack. The entire collection is a combination of modern and antique. We have the finest Italian craftsmanship combined with a fresh combination of materials and silhouettes. And this spirit propels Meilland’s work into a new era in the Salvatore Ferragamo menswear canon, since it encapsulates the classical yet audacious and revolutionary spirit of the house that almost a century ago made its debut in Hollywood and in the American bourgeois society.
