S preading out over the foothills of the Atlas, Marrakech has cast an intoxicating spell over visitors for generations. In previous decades, it was the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Yves Saint Laurent and the Gettys that were like moths to the city’s enchanting light. Today, it’s the Beckhams, the Bransons and every major international luxury hotel group worth its salt. Discerning travellers are flocking to the former imperial city in western Morocco, all attracted by the many exotic contrasts: the compelling blend of the modern and ancient with the cauldron of different cultures all bubbling together. Bohemian spirits and well-heeled jetsetters alike are thrilled by the endless shopping in the labyrinthine alleyways of the souk, the scintillating nightlife, and the electric crackle of life in the UNESCO-protected Djemaa el-Fna. The square’s name means “Assembly of the Dead”, but it is thriving with life—a clamorous hub of snake charmers, colourful dancers, sizzling food stalls and acrobats; all infused with the scent of horses, spices and the night ahead.
