1 6 6 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I Giampiero Bodino recently visited Dubai for a private event for customers in the Middle East and Simply Abu Dhabi had the opportunity to discover his new pieces from the Mediterranean collection and discuss with him the exclusive world of one-of- a-kind bespoke pieces. What is the history of your made-to-order service and did you receive many customer requests for it? The service was actually launched when the Maison was founded in 2013, since the whole concept of our brand was based on one-of-a-kind high jewellery that is mostly, but not entirely, made-to- order. The type of clients who can appreciate and afford this level of design, craftsmanship and stones, often request some kind of personalisation. And what is more exclusive than wearing jewellery made for you only? How does it work? Could you describe the whole process from booking to delivery? The first step is a frank conversation with the client. I need to create a connection, some kind of empathy to succeed in transforming their vision into a desired object. It can take a fewmonths, depending on the jewel and the complexity of the design. It all begins with a simple sketch that then becomes a gouache and, once approved, is made into a resin prototype. This is then fitted on the client to make sure that it sits perfectly on a wrist, or a neck, or it slides effortlessly onto a finger. It usually takes two to three fitting sessions. Once the prototype is perfected for style and fit, it goes to the craftsmen who will take the time necessary to deliver the final product. I’m very keen on personally delivering the jewel.
