One of the strongest brands on the planet, watch lovers expect the very best fromRolex… and Rolex always delivers. At Baselworld2018, the usual high-pitch anticipation for what Rolex would unveil was electric, andwatch lovers were not disappointed by the goods. Not only was there a new widely adored GMT-Master II watch, which for the very first time is available in Oystersteel with a Jubilee bracelet, but also the Rolex Deep Sea D-Blue Dial and a dazzling gem-set Daytona Cosmograph, both of which we’ll focus on here. The new Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deep Sea measures in with a hefty 44mm case that is enhanced by redesigned lugs and sides and a broaderOyster bracelet. TheOysterlock folding safety-clasphas also been newly adapted; however, the big news is that this professional divers’watchhasanewengine—itisnowpoweredbythecalibre3235. Made entirely in-house at Rolex, this new self-winding mechanical movement offers fundamental gains in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetism, convenience and reliability. It incorporates the Chronergy escapement patented by Rolex, which combines high-energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, it is also insensitive to magnetic interference. The oscillator has a blue Parachrom hairspring that is manufactured, also by Rolex, in an exclusive paramagnetic alloy. This Parachrom hairspring is up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring when it comes to shocks of all kinds. It is also fitted with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring its regularity in any position. The calibre3235 is self-winding andpacks a power reserve of 70 hours. This is an insanely efficient and capable diver’s watch. In fact, its real capability will rarely be tested, as it is waterproof to 3,900 metres. The Oyster case was developed to ensure phenomenal resistance to pressure without compromising the size and thickness of the watch, meaning it can still a daily wear watch and isn’t way too chunky. The Ringlock System, a patented case architecture, allows the Deepsea to withstand the colossal pressure exerted at the huge depths. Composed of three elements: a domed 5.5 mm-thick sapphire crystal, a high-performance nitrogen-alloyed stainless steel ring, and a case back in Oystersteel and grade 5 titanium, the Ringlock System is another example of Rolex ingenuity when it comes to extreme challenges. It is also equippedwith a heliumescape valve, developed and patented by Rolex in 1967. It allows excess pressure built up in the watch case to escape during a diver’s decompression phase in a hyperbaric chamber. The Triplock winding crown is like a submarine’s hatch and is equippedwith three seals; it screws down securely against the case, completing the peerless waterproof system. The unidirectional rotatable bezel on the Deepsea is made of an extremelyhardandcorrosion-resistantceramic,isvirtuallyscratchproof, and its colour is unaffected by ultraviolet rays. The knurled edge is constructed for ease of use, evenwhenwearing gloves. As with all Rolex watches, theDeepsea is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification, redefined by Rolex in 2015. This exclusive designation testifies that each watch has successfully undergone a series of tests conductedbyRolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, which exceed watchmaking norms and standards. The SuperlativeChronometer status is symbolised by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch along with an international five-year guarantee. R o l e x D e e p s e a D - B l u e D i a l
