2 1 3 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I GIORGIO ARMANI “Made in Armani” is the title of Giorgio Armani’s men’s spring/summer 2018 collection. This was the message that stood as a runway backdrop when the collection was presented at Milan Men’s Fashion Week. It’s a disarmingly clear message that makes us understand what Mr. Armani wants to express with his menswear collection: a return to his roots and his iconic pieces. The destructured jacket, the two-piece suit, the overcoat, the grey double-breasted jacket similar to the one worn by Richard Gere in American Gigoló— which made Armani world famous—Korean collar shirts, Eastern minimalistic influences and formal pants with pinces were Armani’s key pieces for this collection. There are also some urbanwear references such as versatile and easy-to-wear knits, tone sur tone patterns, sailor-style stripes or micro geometric and optical illusion prints. The colour palette is chromatic and explores different shades from countless tones of white and grey to the brand’s iconic greige (a muted colour famous in the fashion scene. Giorgio Armani has been “the king of greige” since the 80s) to hints of blues, turquoise, amethyst, cobalt and khaki. All these colours have been reinterpreted in the subtlest Armani way (Armani’s essence of being). The elegance is understated and stuns with its fluidity and modernism. In fact, the silhouette shapes the body without exaggerating its forms and transmits a strong sense of relaxed, elegant freedom. Looking through the collection is like entering Giorgio Armani’s archives: a plethora of looks and outfit ensembles that embody the designer’s visual codes and beliefs which still fascinate for their contemporary appeal.
