VERSACE V ersace men’s fall/winter 2018 collection is a reinterpretation of two major themes for Donatella: home and the Versace brand. In fact, the whole show mixes and subverts the codes of men’s fashion by creating interesting interplays and metaphors. The casa (home in English) is a haven of well-being, a place you know and love, and this pervades the whole collection. Versace Home prints (the label’s home collection) such as the “Amor e Psiche” or the “Sipario” print, play an important role in outerwear and shirts. Accessories also link to the Versace Home world with heritage velvet prints on clutches and travel bags that recall velvet curtains and drapes; bracelets that take the shape of forks and knives; a vintage Medusa logo adorning headphones and phone covers. What’s interesting in this collection is that Donatella, reflecting on the concept of “home”, revisits her way of seeing men’s fashion and the whole Versace brand. Home for her is where the Versace man, can allow his to personality ignore boundaries and celebrate individuality, self- indulgence without judgement or intrusion. Home is where you are yourself and where you can express your inner being. These concepts are reflected in the clothes, creating an unexpected style. A Versace bathrobe becomes outerwear worn over tailored suits, tartan prints mixed together create new patterns for suits and coats, pants are cut short above the ankle but either super-tight or loose. Silk, tartan, jersey and cotton are mixed and revamped into unique creations which are the new expression of Versace men’s fashion—a style that from its roots evolves into something new; not revolutionary, but recognisable as a progression.
