O ne of the major taking points during New York FashionWeek earlier this year was the collaboration between award-winning American fashion designer Michael Kors and the celebrated British fashion artist David Downton, for a special edition capsule collection. The designs debuted at the Michael Kors Collection runway show and they will be in the stores by fall. Downton is internationally lauded for his distinctive drawings and stylish portraits of the some of the world’s most beguiling women. Over the last two decades his art has been featured in titles such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Vanity Fair and The Times. Downton got his big break in 1996, when the Financial Times asked him to illustrate the Paris couture shows. The fall 2018 Michael Kors show was held at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Centre in New York and it marks the first time the successful American fashion label has partnered with an artist for a collection. There were more ‘firsts’ for Michael Kors as the collection was the label’s first with no animal fur—the brand will be fur-free by the end of the year. Michael Kors said, ‘This is our first collaboration with an artist for Michael Kors Collection, and it is very personal. David captures people’s essence and style without feeling the need to draw every detail about them—it’s the magic of a great illustrator.’
