This is how i felt when i handed the keys back to the Mercedes-AMGG 63 because i couldn’t pin down what it was that i liked about it, i just did. it was the cumulative effect of many little things that came together in one package and defied what on paper at least, shouldn’t be the best luxury SUV on the market. Why? because compared to other luxury SUVs like the Lamborghini Urus or range rover Sport, it was thirsty, rolled around on its suspension and whilst being ‘all-new,’ still looks 40 years old. Which is no coincidence as the G-Class turns 40 this year after it was originally launched as the G-Wagen in 1979. Strangely it’s the points above which also contribute to its attraction for me because this car defies what corporate marketing think tanks and aerodynamicists tell us what we need from a new car.
