1 5 9 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I T his year Rolex released some incredible watches – as usual – including a jewel-encrusted Cosmograph Daytona and a stunning new Sea-Dweller, but the new GMT-Master II, nicknamed “the Batman” thanks to the blue and black ceramic bidirectional rotatable bezel, is guaranteed to be a fan favourite. Distinctive, sophisticated, sporty, versatile – it’s an essential timepiece constructed in Oystersteel and presented on the unmistakable Jubilee bracelet. Designed as a navigation aid for professionals criss-crossing the globe, over time the GMT-Master became the watch of choice for travellers. The emblematic single- or two-colour bezel has been made available in a variety of colours and combinations and it’s what makes the design unique and instantly recognisable. With traditional hour, minute and seconds hands, a triangle- tipped 24-hour hand, and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with 24-hour graduated Cerachrom insert, the GMT-Master II can display the time in two time zones simultaneously: either the local time and the reference time, or the local time and that of an alternative time zone. The date, at 3 o’clock on the dial, is synchronised with the local time. The watch is powered by the calibre 3285, which debuted in the 2018 GMT-Master II – a new-generation movement developed and manufactured in-house. This high-tech self- winding mechanical movement features the Chronergy escapement patented by Rolex, which delivers solid dependability with high-energy efficiency. The calibre also incorporates the Rolex proprietary blue Parachrom hairspring – a paramagnetic alloy that makes it up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. The power reserve is a decent 70 hours and the watch is waterproof to 100 metres. The Jubilee bracelet, which has been turning heads since 1945, includes the Oysterlock folding safety clasp, which protects against accidental opening. The new Easylink comfort extension link, also allows the length to be increased by 5mm for optimum comfort. Perfect for the frequent traveller, with the triangle-tipped 24-hour hand showing time in a different zone, the ‘Batman’ is one of the heroes of Baselworld 2019.
