I n the nearly 200 years since its Codecasa Shipyards was founded by the shipwright Giovanni Battista in 1825, it has undertaken the build of almost all type of naval craft. From commercial sailing ships and rescue boats for the Coast Guard, to offshore racing boats, steel displacement yachts up to 65 metres, and aluminium fast motor yachts, the diversity is impressive. Battista’s grandson, known as Tistino, founded his own shipyard in 1902, on 1,258sq.m of government land granted to him and located in the Darsena Lucca dock, where he began building small ships. Later, he founded a second shipyard in the new Darsena Toscana dock, in order to have the space required to expand. During his career as a ship builder the estimated number of boats built by Tistino Codecasa is just shy of 100. When he died, his shipyard passed down to two of his five sons: Sandro and Ugo. The new Codecasa generation perfectly managed the passage from wood to metal and the company became one of the Italian pioneers in steel ship building, with commercial boats, fishing boats and tender boats to small cargo ships. Codecasa Shipyards entered the luxury pleasure yacht field in the 1970s with Fulvio Codecasa at the helm, who currently still manages the Group. A 25m explorer boat, the Gram, was first launched in 1970, followed two years later by the 35m G. V. They quickly became forerunners in the construction of large steel and aluminium yachts, and since 2000, Codecasa Shipyards has been building fast motor yachts with generous dimensions.
