9 2 S I M P LY A B U DH A B I Design and Architecture Creating an urban resort with a relaxed seaside vibe, the interior design of Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai is a true reflection of the dynamic city of Dubai: modern with a timeless soul. Inspired by the city’s multiculturalism, and the way in which Dubai’s various facets manage to come together to form the identity of the city, is an integral part of the resort’s design. Mr. Wilkes, who is recognised for his vision of blending cosmopolitan influences with tradition and his pursuit of the highest standards of design, has created a truly memorable experience. As the entry point to the property, it was vital that the design of the lobby reflects the spirit of the hotel. This has been achieved with a contemporary layering of patterns and textures, warm woods and marble to create a minimalist, yet luxurious palette of colours and outlines. Describing his design inspiration, Mr. Wilkes explains, “As Mandarin Oriental arrives in the Middle East, it has travelled along the Silk Road collecting thoughts and ideas along the way.” The gardens lead from the entrance through to the vast lobby, taking the form of water features, walkways, stone bridges and teak decks leading guests out to the beach. Blurring the lines between outside and in, the pathway was designed to lead guests through a forest of light and crystal canopies evoking the ocean. The overall effect is rich in texture and reflection; it is sophisticated, elegant and timeless. Furniture and accessories were meticulously chosen, with the design team employing a mix of distinctive interior design labels with bespoke pieces and products. High- end brands include Kettal from Barcelona and Poltrana Frau Turin, Italy, along with Viya metal and inlays from New Delhi, with fabrics from Jim Thompson in Thailand and Atmosphere in Bengaluru. Linen textures, velvet and embroidery all combine to create an inviting and relaxing interior. Sophisticated and elegant, with interest, texture and composition, the design succeeds in being refined, rich and relaxed all at once; cultivated yet comfortable. Guestrooms and Suites Using its magical seaside setting as inspiration, the rooms and suites are decorated with earthy tones and vibrant blues, golds and aquamarines. Each of the 178 spacious rooms and 78 elegant suites boasts its own breathtaking sea or skyline view, and most come with private balconies. No other property in Dubai offers such proximity to the sea from its rooms and suites. Rooms are truly urban retreats in the heart of the city: light and bright with floor-to-ceiling windows affording spectacular views of the Arabian Gulf or Dubai’s skyline. All of the sea-facing rooms feature balconies and all rooms are equipped with user-friendly technology, including interactive digital bedsides, Ultra HD Smart televisions, a media hub and charging station with high-speed internet.
