Think flannel, tie- dye prints, leather-studded belts – and a whole lot of attitude. Clearly music remains the muse for the Dsquared2 duo, as elements of punk, grunge, and even disco characterise the colourful collection. The runway show proved how central the vibe is to their aesthetic, with room set up like the coolest club in town as the models acted out a concert of sorts against the backdrop of pounding beats and bright colours. As they have been doing for a few years – and what we’re seeing more often at many shows now – Dsquared2 showed a coed runway. It makes a lot of sense, as Dsquared2 fans are completely committed to the brand, regardless of gender, and the collections show a strong through-line between the men’s and women’s ranges. It’s a testament to the clarity and expression of their vision. While the runway show featured a multitude of textures and colours all worn at once, when taken individually, the pieces offer a fun blend of party and practical. The 90s grunge- inspired theme has at its heart an outdoorsy masculinity in the form of utility trousers, shearling coats, plaid jackets, parkas and anoraks, and even a rather sensible-looking trench – all anchored by chunky mountain boots. By contrast, there’s a terrific amount of embellishment and tactile interest in the metallic fabrics, psychedelic holographic prints, neon graffiti-inspired patterns, and fur. The fun in the Dsquared2 proposition is the opportunity to express your own individuality through the intriguing mix of rock & roll bombast, rugged practicality, and style staples, like the gorgeously cut suit jackets. With this new collection, Dan and Dean have clearly pushed beyond their comfort zones to elevate Dsquared2’s contemporary streetwise sensibility to a new level of iconic style statements.
