The designing twins Dan and Dean Caten hosted a star-studded celebration in Milan to debut the Fall Winter line in true rock-star style. But the clothes stole the show: musical inspiration was everywhere, ski and snowboard culture from the Caten’s native Canada was well represented, colours were bright and cheerful, and it was clear that Dquared2 has reached a new level with an intriguing clash of styles that somehow harmonise together perfectly. A vibrant mix of eclectic styles, the collection is headlined by rock & roll fantasy elements: a bit of punk, a large serving of 90s grunge, a bit of shimmery disco, and more than a little Madonna. In other hands, this might have been a confusing mishmash of influences, but Dan and Dean somehow have integrated these themes seamlessly. Flannel plaids in the season’s palette of reds and yellows lend a menswear vibe, tying in nicely with the menswear collection, while leather and chain details lend a punk edge. Skirts feature pockets and utilitarian detailing, whilst topped with logo tees and bright abstract-print jackets with fur trim. A chunky orange fur is a standout, paired with a shimmery tank dress, while a more practical-seeming dark parka surprises with its gorgeous, brightly-hued lining. A metallic structured jacket, cinched with a studded skinny belt, brings an air of feminine mystique to the collection. With its use of flannel, shearling, and more utilitarian elements, the collection has more than a hint of the outdoor lifestyle as well – think snowboarding or skiing chic. Blending that base note with the heady mix of shimmering metallics, sequins, fur, and bright prints all leads to a new vision of cool that transcends trends. Dsquared2 fans are devoted diehards, and with this collection, it’s easy to see why.
