CHANEL FALL-WINTER 2019/20 READY-TO-WEAR COLLECTION T he Grand Palais in Paris was transformed into a peaceful mountain village to welcome the Chanel Fall-Winter 2019/20 Ready-to-Wear collection. The metamorphosis was originally imagined by Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard, to create the atmosphere of a beautiful winter’s day, in the grand nave of the Palais, which is so dear to the House. A star-studded crowd was on hand to witness the enchanting transformation, including Chanel brand ambassadors – Penélope Cruz and Kristen Stewart among them – iconic actresses Marion Cotillard and Monica Bellucci, legendary supermodels Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell, and the American musician, Janelle Monae, who has become a fashion icon in her own right. Down the runway strode the elegant mountain dwellers, wearing brogan shoes enhanced with a platform sole, tweed fedoras atop their heads, in the spirit of romantic dandies walking through the powdery snow – there was no doubt this collection was created for the very chicest of wintertime revels. Created by Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard, the collection features silhouettes warmed by a blending of masculine and feminine accents, a major stamp of the Chanel style. A palette of winter white, beige, black and navy blue is punctuated with flashes of purple, fuchsia, brick and emerald green, providing a burst of jewel-toned colours for those frosty winter days. Versatile tweed – in houndstooth, tartan and big check motifs, a dusting of snowflakes, in chevrons or imitating astrakhan, top stitched and quilted – brings a menswear effect to suits with wide-cut trousers worn high at the waist, coupled with great overcoats. Fastened with a high collar or a shawl collar and mini cape, enhanced with a trompe-l’oeil bolero or a faux- fur lapel, sometimes embellished with martingales, straight or double-breasted, trapeze or belted, maxi pockets slit or buttoned and folded down – the coats are different every time but always exquisite.
