T he Langham Hotel on New York’s Fifth Avenue is a contemporary beacon of design and prestige. In close proximity to Times Square and Grand Central Station, it offers a luxurious oasis in an urban setting. Now, its 234 guest room offering includes the newly landscaped terrace rooms and suites on its fifth and eleventh floors. Designed and landscaped by Blondie’s Treehouse, a New York- based landscape design and horticultural company, the terraces have existed within the landmark hotel since it opened its doors in 2013, but up until they have remained off limits. Now, in a move to provide private terrace areas, as well as family-sized rooms, the outdoor spaces have been given a new lease of life, and made available to book. The eleventh floor terraces overlook Fifth Avenue, while the fifth floor versions are enclosed. With three available on each floor, the area can be used as a private terrace for the attached room, or as a combined suite for events or families travelling together, whereby all three rooms are booked as one and the dividers are moved to allow for it to be used as an entire communal terrace. The private patios are attached to three guestrooms on the fifth floor as well as one junior suite, and two guestrooms on the eleventh floor. On the fifth floor, the terraces are walled-in private enclaves divided by hand-crafted wooden walls covered with faux English ivy, accented with large evergreen shrubs of chamaecyparis obtusa, otherwise known as ‘false cypress’. A large rhododendron maximum, also known as ‘great laurel,’ takes up the back corner as a green anchor for the entire space, along with English ivy, which will progressively continue to grow up the back wall. Teal furnishings include a couch, two armchairs, a coffee table and two wicker ottomans on each terrace.
