The moveable wood lattice dividers are covered with fargesia rufa, a non-invasive bamboo used to create a sense of privacy thanks to its dense, bright leaves. Small low bowls of carex, a grass-like plant, and moss add touches of green along with a wall of English ivy at the northern end. The terraces are the only rooms at the hotel with outdoor spaces – not even the Empire State Presidential Suite has that – and as of August 2019 they have been made available for guests to book in advance, as opposed to the unexpected room upgrade previously on offer. However, even though the terraces are now listed on the hotel website, guests will still need to call The Langham Hotel directly to reserve these sanctuaries, to enable staff to walk guests through the specifics of the different layout options. This means that while the secret of the terrace rooms may be ‘out’, they remain a juicy insider’s tip for travellers looking for something special on their next NYC visit. The connection to the outdoors continues downstairs, where the (indoor) Chuan Spa incorporates natural elements curated by group therapy spa manager, Amy Chan. Providing an environment of wellbeing, the spa’s lobby has a waterfall providing the calming sound of flowing water, while the saunas in both the men’s and women’s sections of the spa incorporate natural cedar seating and pink Himalayan salt bricks. To make the most of the terrace experience, the hotel room service complements the greatest al fresco environment. Alternatively, New York’s most discerning epicureans will appreciate the modern interpretations of Ai Fiori, The Langham’s Michelin-starred restaurant.
