A colourful evocation of British summertime, Riccardo Tisci’s Spring/Summer 2021 collection ‘In Bloom’ for Burberry takes on the symbolism of the season of regrowth. Rich in saturated blues and oranges, the collections plays with shapes and images that at once innovate and reinterpret the core Burberry essence. About the collection’s inspiration, Tisci has said “It began with a thought of British summertime; embracing the elements with a trench coat on the beach mixing with the sand and the water. I envisioned the people of this space, like the lighthouse keeper, a mermaid, and a shark, set against the ocean, then brought to land.” The result is an imaginative – even surreal at times – narrative with mythological references and aquatic themes. Circles are a motif that runs throughout the collection. As Tisci said, “The circle is hugely symbolic – regrowth, renewal, the circle of life. The collection is called ‘In Bloom’ because I was thinking about regeneration, about dynamic youth, about nature constantly recreating itself, always growing and evolving, always alive. Water is a symbol of that also – of newness, freshness and cleansing. And through water, life grows – water is what allows nature to bloom. Everything is circular.” Water is a natural theme for the brand – indeed, the rainy British summers are the reason the iconic Burberry trenchcoat has been a must- have staple for generations. The aquatic theme resonates with shark-fin prints, images of sea shells and mermaids, and sparkling fishing nets bedecking the bodices.
