W ho doesn’t want a little more colour in their lives? The Hublot Big Bang MP-11 Carbon Rainbow is colourful, that much is obvious from the outset. It’s big, it’s bold, it’s innovative – it’s Hublot. A circle of precious gems takes pride of place around the 45mm carbon-fibre case in a joyous riot of rainbow colours: rubies, pink sapphires, amethysts, blue sapphires, blue topazes, tsavorites, yellow sapphires and orange sapphires. The colourways are echoed along the leather strap, rendered in slightly less saturated tones than those seen on the bezel, that merge together in an ombre pattern. As we’ve come to expect from Hublot, a daring construction movement accompanies the unique watch design. The 14- day power reserve is made possible by Hublot’s original and spectacular design movement integrating seven barrels paired in series. To enable the transmission of energy between the horizontal axis of the barrels and the vertical wheel driving the displays, Hublot used system rarely seen in watchmaking: a 90-degree return by means of the helical gear wheel of the “endless screw” type. While more sombre in appearance, we can’t overlook the 3D carbon-fibre case. Because it’s really what allows the colours to really pop. The high-tech material of the case is a fibre mesh embedded in an epoxy resin, giving it something of a matte appearance that delivers subtle contrast to the hues on the bezel.
