Simply Abu Dhabi IV

As the UAE’s largest specialised diabetes resource, the college combines all aspects of treatment for and research into the disease under one roof and is dedicated to diabetes treatment, training, public health and research. The world-class research facility at the Centre is headed by renowned Imperial College researchers who will work to slow down and reverse the development of diabetes based on the latest evidence-based treatments and research. Another example of Aldar’s commitment to projects designed for the greater good of the nation, the Centre will investigate the causes and treatment of diabetes in the locality and the possible part that lifestyle might play. The UAE has the second highest rate of diabetes in the world. With the improving nutrition and luxury lifestyle in Abu Dhabi, weight gain can be an issue and it is estimated that more than a quarter of UAE nationals suffer from diabetes. It is vital that measures are put in place to ensure there isn’t an increase in diabetes cases and the centre will work to manage and eventually reverse this worrying trend. As the UAE’s largest multi-disciplinary diabetes facility, the centre will be dedicated to prevention, treatment, training and research focusing all aspects of diabetes and its complications. The ICLDC will provide the most comprehensive treatment for diabetes available, offering solutions to those patients and their families coping with the day-to-day realities of diabetes. As his Excellency Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director and CEO of investment agency Mubadala Development and ICLDC Chairman remarked at the centre’s opening; “The statistics show that each of us in the UAE is likely to have a close relative or friend living with diabetes. The opening of the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre is a first and significant step in the realisation of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s vision to provide the people of the UAE with the best healthcare facilities in the world.” As we have now come to expect of the ‘Amazing Aldar’, the iconic ICLDC building itself is simply outstanding having been based on the geometric structure of an insulin molecule, but it’s not simply a dramatic structure in Abu Dhabi. Since opening in 2006, this Aldar-constructed centre has treated over 30,000 registered patients, massively improving the lives of those who both suffer from the disease and their families. IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON DIABETES CENTRE Abu Dhabi’s state-of-the-art specialist diabetes centre was officially opened on 14 August 2006 by His Highness Sheikh Suroor BinMohammed Al Nahyan amongst much excitement and expectation. ICLDC is wholly owned by Mubadala Development Company who has partnered with one of the leading medical academic institutions in the world, Imperial College London, to bring the highest international standards of care to Abu Dhabi. 49 SIMPLY ABU DHABI
