The brand’s commitment to pushing boundaries is exemplified by its ability to create beds tailored for private aircraft and even utilising an aircraft wing to craft a headboard. The repertoire extends to round, rotating beds and custom mattress shapes designed for super yachts. The list of bespoke creations seems endless, each one representing Savoir’s unwavering dedication to fulfilling the dreams of its clients. Savoir’s distinction lies not only in its innovative designs but also in its unmatched adherence to traditional craft techniques and the finest natural materials. Producing fewer than 1,000 beds per year, the brand prioritises quality over quantity, reflecting its historic roots at The Savoy Hotel in London. Savoir’s heritage is a tapestry woven with over a century of expertise, dedication, and a commitment to craftsmanship. In 1889, the famous impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte unveiled a new standard in luxury and comfort with the opening of The Savoy Hotel. In his quest for the best, D’Oyly Carte secured the services of César Ritz and Auguste Escoffier, the world’s leading hotel manager and chef, respectively. No creature comfort had been spared: guests including royalty marvelled at the en suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water, the electric lighting and the ‘luxurious ascending rooms’ – now more commonly known as lifts. During a refit in 1905, it was felt that no bed on the market met the hotel’s legendary standards of excellence, so the prestigious upholsterer James Edwards Ltd was specially commissioned to create the Savoy Bed. Marrying traditional techniques of handcraft with natural materials such as wool, horse tail and cotton, the bed was meticulously designed to provide long-lasting comfort and support to the most demanding guests in the world. To ensure exclusivity, D’Oyly Carte bought James Edwards Ltd, leading to the establishment of The Savoy Bedworks. This historic move marked the birth of a legacy that would last for generations. Over the years, The Savoy Bed hosted luminaries from Sir Winston Churchill to Giacomo Puccini and Marilyn Monroe. The late King Hassan II of Morocco, known to travel with a large retinue and his own furniture, had his mattress damaged in transit. Forced to use a Savoy Bed, he declared it ‘like sleeping on a cloud’ and ordered 24 for his palace, solidifying the bed’s reputation as a masterclass in craftsmanship, comfort, and style. In 1997, the ownership of The Savoy Bedworks changed hands, leading to the establishment of Savoir Beds. Despite the passage of time and changes in ownership, Savoir remained committed to preserving the time-honoured craft techniques and exceptional natural materials that defined its origins, with its beds still gracing all the top suites at The Savoy Hotel to this day.
