Lisbon: The City of Seven Hills The enchanting capital of Portugal has long captivated the hearts and imaginations of global travellers. This ancient city, founded over 3,000 years ago, proffers its rich historical legacy alongside a progressive, vibrant energy. Cascading down the seven hills that overlook the shimmering Tagus River, Lisbon’s neighbourhoods are a feast for the senses. Rattling, iconic yellow trams climb the city’s steep, winding streets, transporting passengers through a tapestry of architectural delights. Ornate, azulejo-tiled buildings in bright blues and greens stand as testaments to Portugal’s storied past, while trendy boutiques, vegan-friendly cafes, and lively bars with vinyl DJs inject a youthful, cosmopolitan spirit into the urban landscape. During my visit the blooming jacaranda trees paint delicate violet hues above charming plazas and there is always another meandering alleyway to venture down. The glittering waters of the Tagus are a constant companion when exploring Lisbon’s many historical landmarks and cultural offerings. One of the most crucial elements of any visit, to any city, is the accommodation. After a day of sightseeing, being able to surrender into the luxury of a fine hotel, with refined comfort and friendly service, is one of life’s great pleasures. And it is here that Lisbon offers three very different, but equally exceptional properties. Simply Abu Dhabi | 143
