When I did arrive, the reception staff—who look fantastic in safari guide uniforms—were courteous and efficient, and while my key-card for the Capelo King Room was prepared, friendly porters promptly assisted me with luggage. During my stay the hospitality also extended to thoughtful gestures, such as small gifts left on the bed in the evening, alongside a ‘Tip of the Day’ postcard that offered experiences, such as a tour of the old town in an authentic old Tuk Tuk. Occupying over 500 square metres and offering 165 seats, it pays tribute to Mediterranean, Italian and Portuguese cuisine. Comprised of the Gastrobar, where light meals and exquisite drinks are served, the Crudo bar, where fresh fish and seafood are prepared, and the ristorante, where the vibe is that of a rambunctious traditional Italian osteria, the gastronomic experiences are exceptional in all three spaces at different moments in the day, from breakfast to dinner. An essential tip is not to miss the opulent basement bathrooms—the botanical decor and Calcutta marble sinks make a bold statement and are testament to the originality and panache at The Ivens. All the dishes I ordered were outstanding, especially the spider crab ravioli and ossobuco with saffron risotto, and I will always remember ROCCO for as the place where I enjoyed the finest example of the classic Italian dessert, Tiramisú. It was made from scratch, at the table, by a gifted waiter who made all the whisking, pouring, balancing, and final presentation all look so easy. And after the theatre of the preparation, the taste was no less compelling!
