History &Architecture The Verride Palácio Santa Catarina is the perfect base to explore Lisbon from and it offers an experience that blends old world grandeur with modern luxury. The origins of the palace can be traced back to the Pombaline era, a pivotal period of Lisbon’s architectural renaissance following the devastating earthquake of 1755. Commissioned by one of the city’s most prominent noble families, the building was designed by renowned Portuguese architect Eugénio dos Santos, whose visionary work helped redefine Lisbon’s urban landscape. “This property is a testament to the enduring spirit of Lisbon,” explains Teresa Guimarães, the hotel’s General Manager. “Every inch of the Verride Palácio Santa Catarina is imbued with the city’s rich cultural heritage, from the intricate façade to the meticulously restored interiors.” In the early 2000s, the palace was acquired by Dutch entrepreneur Kees Eijrond, who saw the immense potential in reviving this architectural gem. Eijrond, who had previously owned a celebrated ballet school, embarked on an ambitious renovation project, the culmination of which marries modern luxuries with the building’s historic charm. The result is a harmonious symphony of heritage and the contemporary, which welcomes selective guests from around the world. Arrival Experience Ascending the staircase to the hotel’s entrance I was impressed by the beautiful Baroque façade, adorned with intricately carved stonework and wrought-iron balconies. These perfectly preserved period features contrast wonderfully with the lobby décor, which exudes a more modern, refined, and residential ambiance. “The lobby is designed to feel like you’re entering a private home, rather than a traditional hotel,” says Guimarães. “We wanted to create an inviting and comfortable atmosphere that sets the tone for the entire stay.” Warm lighting filters through the space, illuminating the crown mouldings, ornate chandeliers, and meticulously preserved architectural details that pay homage to the building’s storied past. I was greeted by the hotel’s attentive yet not overly formal concierge team, who are smiley, relaxed, and eager to share insights about the property’s history. Guest Rooms The Verride Palácio Santa Catarina’s 18 exquisitely appointed suites are stunning, in design, comfort, and in sheer scale. Ranging from 506 to 861 square feet, each suite is a study in modern elegance, featuring soaring ceilings, chic furnishings, and richly hued textiles that create a soothing haven. “We wanted to honour the building’s history while also providing our guests with the highest standards of luxury,” explains Guimarães. “Each suite is a private sanctuary that allows our visitors to immerse themselves in the charm of Lisbon.” The bathrooms are equally impressive, outfitted with oversized rainfall showers, deep soaking tubs, and designer amenities. When not soaking in the tub or enjoying the room, my personal highlight was the unobstructed view of the Tagus and the city’s iconic skyline seen from the privacy of the furnished balcony. It was hypnotic watching the constant ebb and flow of the city’s maritime activity, from weather-beaten fishing boats to gleaming yachts gliding along. 162 | Simply Abu Dhabi
