History & Architecture The grand Palazzo Papadopoli was originally constructed by the noble Coccina family in the 16th century. Over the centuries, it changed hands several times, eventually being purchased in the 19th century by Greek bankers and counts Niccolò and Angelo Papadopoli. In 1922, the palazzo was inherited by the Arrivabene Valenti Gonzaga family, who oversaw its transition into the luxurious Aman hotel in 2013, and who reside on the top floor of the palace. The sensitive restoration of this historic property was led by acclaimed architect Jean-Michel Gathy, who skilfully married the palazzo’s Baroque grandeur with contemporary elegance. Original frescoes adorn the ceilings of the common areas and guest rooms, while mosaic floors, Murano glass chandeliers, and ornate Rubelli silk wallcoverings pay homage to the building’s storied past. Minimalist furnishings by B&B Italia provide a stylish counterpoint, creating a harmonious balance between old and new. Arrival Experience There are two ways to arrive—discreetly via a quiet backstreet, or via the main entrance on the iconic Grand Canal by private water taxi. From the canal side, guests are greeted by the palazzo’s imposing Baroque facade, from the street side, a short stroll from the Rialto Bridge, you pass through a garden with modern sculptures and into the lobby. Immediately the sense of centuries past is striking. A giant-sized medieval lantern and a marble chessboard floor, sets the tone for the experience to come. There is no front desk for checking in, which creates the impression that you are not entering a hotel, but rather the entrance foyer of a grand residence. Here the welcome is discreet and I am soon escorted to my room for the passport formalities to be undertaken in private comfort. Guest Rooms The Aman Venice’s 24 guest accommodations range from the Palazzo Bedrooms to the exquisite Alcova Tiepolo Suite, each one uniquely designed and adorned with historic architectural details. Many offer breathtaking views of the Grand Canal, while others overlook the hotel’s lush back gardens—one of the city’s rarest private green spaces. Simply Abu Dhabi | 177
